Primary Amenorrhea

What is Primary Amenorrhea?

Primary amenorrhea is a condition characterized by the absence of menstruation in a female by the age of 15, despite having normal growth and secondary sexual characteristics, or by the age of 13 if there are no secondary sexual characteristics present. It is a symptom rather than a disease itself and indicates an underlying issue with the reproductive system or related hormonal imbalances.

Diagnosis

  1. Medical History and Physical Examination:

    • Family History: Evaluating any genetic or familial patterns.
    • Growth and Development: Assessing puberty progression and secondary sexual characteristics.
  2. Laboratory Tests:

    • Hormone Levels: Measuring levels of FSH, LH, estrogen, prolactin, and thyroid hormones.
    • Genetic Testing: Identifying chromosomal abnormalities or specific genetic conditions.
  3. Imaging Studies:

    • Ultrasound: To visualize the reproductive organs and detect any anatomical abnormalities.
    • MRI or CT Scan: For detailed imaging of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland if a central cause is suspected.
