Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine the organs inside the abdomen and pelvis. It involves making small incisions through which a laparoscope—a thin, lighted tube with a camera—is inserted. This allows the gynecologist to view the abdominal and pelvic organs on a screen in real-time. Diagnostic laparoscopy is often used to diagnose conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), fibroids, ovarian cysts, and unexplained pelvic pain. It can also be employed to evaluate the reproductive organs in cases of infertility. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and allows for a thorough examination with minimal recovery time compared to open surgery. If necessary, surgical instruments can be inserted through additional small incisions to treat any abnormalities found during the procedure.
